The second installment of the monthly music blog focusing on new tracks discovered in February and, again, mostly lifted from Marc Riley’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

INSECURE MEN ‘I DON’T WANT TO DANCE (WITH MY BABY)’ (FAT POSSUM)

An offshoot of the Fat White Family (Saul Adamszewski) and Childhood (Ben Romans-Hopcraft) formed in the confines of the Queen’s Head pub in Stockwell. This first track preceded the ‘S/T’ album that was released on 23rd February. A haunting pop song with a video to match the mood:

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA ‘AMERICAN GUILT’ (JAGJAGUWAR)

Taken from Rubin Nielsen’s forthcoming fourth studio album Sex And Food, due out on 6th April. This boisterous track gives us a taste of potentially what’s to come. The band are playing four dates in the UK kicking off at the Roundhouse, London on May 24th.

THE LOVELY EGGS ‘BIG SEA’ (EGG RECORDS)

The infatuation with this band continues! Taken from the highly acclaimed This Is Eggland album and produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips). This is the outstanding track from a record that has a lot to offer from start to finish. Constantly touring throughout this year.

PARQUET COURTS ‘ALMOST HAD TO START A FIGHT/IN AND OUT OF PATIENCE’

Brand new track taken from the forthcoming ‘Wide Awake!’ album due for release on 18th May and released on Rough Trade Records. Produced by Danger Mouse and mixed by the wonderful Claudius Mittendorfer. Constantly releasing and constantly evolving.

HIPPIES VS GHOSTS ‘NO LEFT NO RIGHT’ (HIPPIES VS GHOSTS)

Discovered on Marc Riley’s show and taken from the self-titled album released on 23rd February. One of those tracks where you can’t understand why you like it but you just like it.

Jen Cloher ‘Analysis Paralysis’ (Milk! Records)

Taken from the self-titled album that was released last August on Milk! Records. Jen has since recorded two live sessions for Marc Riley’s show and I’ve really got to like everything that she is about. Accompanied on guitar by Courtney Barnett this is a seven-minute track that could simply go on for another 30! Listen to the live version recorded for Marc Riley’s show if you can track it down. Just wonderful.

Joan As Police Woman ‘Tell Me’ (PIAS)

The first track taken from the ‘Damned Devotion’ album released through PIAS on 9th February. ‘Tell Me’ reminds me of Carli Simon and has all the hallmarks for a classic pop song.

Slug ‘No Heavy Petting’ (Memphis Industries)

Taken from the forthcoming HiggledyPiggledy album due out on Memphis Industries on 13th April. I’ve listened to this track a lot in February and it has been one of the outstanding tracks of the month. A short UK tour commences on 27th April at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.

Cabbage ‘Arms Of Pleonexia’ (BMG Rights)

I come and go with Cabbage but this track stands out from their most recent output. They did an excellent live session for Marc Riley last month which enamoured me to them a little more. Taken from their forthcoming Nihilistic Glamour Shots due out on 30th March.

FORGOTTEN GEM:

ABBA ‘THE VISITORS’ (EPIC RECORDS)

I was a big ABBA fan when I was growing up, and they were the only band who united our house musically. Despite all their hits, this song completely by-passed until two years ago when I heard it on Radcliffe & Maconie’s ‘The Chain’ feature on their BBC Radio 6 Music show. This is simply an outstanding song which was totally ahead of its time.
